strange status change behaviour

recently we had an order with regular paypal payment where it seems, the customer did leave the paypal site immediately after payment. so the order wasn't finished but the payment went through (we got email from paypal). we finished the order in backend next day so that the shop confirmation emails would be generated. later that day we set status to paid, then shipped and finished. a day later in the middle of the night system changed back to status 'paid' without any user causing it.

Could paypal has initiated it or where does such changes come from.

ok. so paypal has some kind of influence on the status. and what could trigger a status change from finished to paid more than 24 hours later?

It's possible. But it turns out the system works.
